Know Your Skill Level

Before you head out, it’s important to be realistic with your riding skill level. Dirt bikes are fun, but they’re also dangerous, and difficult terrain makes that worse. If you’re still getting the hang of riding your bike in bumpy or sticky terrain, you should think twice about going anywhere that might be considered a hard ride.

Ocotillo Wells

Ocotillo Wells is a dry and sandy unincorporated part of San Diego, and you’ve probably seen it in a movie or two. Since the 1950s, it’s been a popular place for off-road enthusiasts to find adventures and thrills. There are over 85,000 acres of off-roading-friendly area open to the public, with the difficulty ranging from beginner to expert. The elevation is approximately 163 ft above sea level, which can impact your breathing slightly.

Ransburg

A small town of just 69 people, Ransburg, California was a thriving town that produced gold for decades after the gold rush. The White House Saloon serves cold brew to the many visitors who come to explore the area with their off-road vehicles. Be extremely cautious, though. While most of the terrain is beginner to intermediate, there are a number of unmarked, open mine shafts. The elevation here is around 3,504 ft.

Pioneertown

For a more consistently easy locale, try Pioneertown, California, in the Yucca Valley. It started life as a western film set, but now acts as a tourist stop and concert venue. The trails in Yucca Valley connect through to Big Bear Mountain and ride fairly easy while still providing incredible backdrops. Pioneertown rests at about 4,000 ft above sea level.

Mammoth

For those who want a familiar sight in a new context, Mammoth Mountain isn’t just for skiing. Summertime on the mountain means incredible off-roading trails and a cool breeze. Between July and August, it’s likely to have no snow at all, making it a great time to visit with your dirt bike. This area is beginner to expert, with an elevation of around 7,880 ft above sea level.
