History of Polaris® Vehicles

The Beginning of the Legend

Our story begins in 1945. World War II was at an end and metal production was at a soaring high. A small company named Hetteen Hoist & Derrick built unique machines for farmers. The work was seasonal and the men in the company embarked on outdoorsy adventures in the winter. But to be able to hunt and fish, they needed some way to traverse across the snow. They created a snowmobile intended for their personal use but quickly saw high customer interest.

 

Rapid Growth

The company was later renamed Polaris, which is the brightest star in Ursa Minor constellation. It's also known as the North Star and it serves as an ideal fixed point for making navigational calculations. By 1960, the company produced hundreds of its iconic snowmobiles. A sudden market boom created a need for more experienced management skills and the company was sold to Textron. This market growth lasted until the 1980s when it came to a grinding halt. At that time, only three manufacturers out of the previous 63 lived to see another day.

 

Adapting and Rebuilding

Textron faced company liquidation and a plant shutdown, prompting its desire to get out. The president of Polaris®, W. Hall Wendel Jr, was told to sell the company. Instead, he quit Textron and led a buyout of Polaris®. The company only had 100 workers but was determined to grow. Polaris® repaid the Textron debt ahead of schedule and worked to innovate each new model. In 1984, they ventured out into the world of ATVs. 

 

In 1990, they became the first major United States firm to create a personal watercraft. These and other innovative ventures helped cement Polaris® as a cutting-edge and quality company. They built a loyal customer base and today are a titan of the industry.
