The Beginning of Suzuki Powersports

The company traces its history back to 1909 when it was launched by Michio Suzuki. Originally, the company's name was Suzuki Loom Works. For the first thirty years, they developed and produced weaving looms and machines. 

 

While these products were popular, the company leadership knew that product diversification would help the business grow. In 1937, Suzuki® started developing prototype cars that used compact designs and cutting-edge, liquid-cooled, four-stroke and four-cylinder engines.

 

In 1952, Suzuki® started producing a motorized bike with a 36cc one-horsepower engine known as the Power Free. Four short years later, they were making 6,000 motorcycles a month! They were also producing automobiles that saw success as well.

 

Suzuki® Powersports Vehicles in Competitions

The Suzuki® powersports models were impressive, high-performing vehicles. It wasn't long before owners began using them on the racetrack. In 1962, Ernst Degner claimed the first company victory in a motorcycle racing world championship grand prix in the 50cc category. Degner played a role in designing the 50cc and 125cc engines. He claimed five more 50cc titles over the next six years.

 

In 1961, another iconic Suzuki® powersports racer joined the team. Hugh Anderson became a double world champion in the 50cc and 125cc categories in 1963. He won the 50cc category the next year and the 125cc championship in 1965.

 

Over the following years, Suzuki® powersports vehicles were often seen claiming victory in a variety of categories. Many racers earned impressive titles, from Joel Robert with the 250cc motocross victory to Barry Sheene claiming the first Suzuki 500cc world title.
