A little snow on the ground can't stop your UTV. With a few modifications and a little preparation, you can enjoy a fun and safe UTV ride in the snow. We've gathered up some helpful strategies for getting your side-by-side ready to ride in the snow below. If you have any questions or want to explore UTVs for sale, head over to Langston Motorsports. Our dealership is located in Perris, California, and we also serve those in Temecula and Orange County.

1. Prepare Your UTV

You'll need to take some steps to ensure your UTV is ready for the bitterly cold winter temperatures. Start by swapping out your standard engine fluids for products designed for the winter. Check that there isn't any excess water in your coolant that could freeze. You'll also want to replace your coolant for a product made to handle below-freezing temperatures.

You can also upgrade your side-by-side to be better suited for winter riding. Add a snow plow to easily clear a riding path (or keep your driveway clear of snow). Get snow tires that can provide much-needed traction or even upgrade to tracks. Invest in a full cover to keep you cozy and shielded from the freezing winds and snow. Or, at the very least, get a windshield to help block some of the wind.

2. Prepare Yourself

You will need to adjust your normal UTV riding gear a bit for winter riding. The already cold temperatures will feel even worse once you add wind to the picture. Wearing the right attire will ensure you stay comfortable and don't have to end your trip early due to chattering teeth.

A full-face helmet is your best bet. It offers the most coverage and added insulation to keep your face warm. Goggles or a face shield will help offer needed eye protection. Insulated gloves are a great choice to keep your hands warm. After all, cold hands can struggle to manipulate the controls. Wear plenty of layers to maximize the heat (and give you the option of removing a layer if the weather warms up). Don't forget snow pants and a snow jacket for the last layer.

3. Drive Safely

Trails that are no problem in the summer can become more challenging in the winter. Snow can add bumps and divots, not to mention there's the threat of black ice. While it's painful to not take your UTV to its limits, you will want to adopt slower speeds than normal. A slower pace will help you stay better in control as you cruise around the more unpredictable trails. Focus on keeping your ride slow and steady. Avoid any sudden movements as much as possible, such as slamming on your brakes or jerking your UTV to the side. Consistent speed and direction help facilitate a safe ride. Try to slowly come to a stop whenever you can.

Remember that cold weather can affect your endurance. You may not be able to ride as long as you usually do. Test the waters the first few winter rides and don't go as far as you usually do. You don't want to drive for too long in one direction and be exhausted and still have a long way back to your tow vehicle waiting for you.
