If you’re in need of an adrenaline boost, a thrilling road trip, or just an efficient vehicle for commuting, you’ve likely considered a motorcycle. But these vehicles aren’t one homogeneous group—there are plenty of different types of bikes. We here at Langston Motorsports want to make sure you get a bike that fits you, so we’ve put together some information on the most common types of motorcycle. Standard

The standard motorcycle is, of course, the standard. These are simple bikes with a design that could lend itself to any uses. These bikes are great starter bikes if you’re trying to figure out your riding style, or if you need a bike that’s a jack of all trades, master of none.

Cruiser

Cruisers are what most folks picture when they think of motorcycles. These are classically-styled, slightly stripped-down motorcycles named for being good as “cruising” around town. These bikes are great for new and experienced riders alike, offering easy control and excellent customization.

The most famous sub-class of cruiser is likely the chopper, a “chopped” down version of the average cruiser. These bikes are leaner, louder, and harder to control, but the minimalist design and outstanding aesthetic makes it a favorite for mechanics and experienced riders.

Sport

Sport bikes are a forward-heavy type of motorcycle built for speed and agility. These tend to be relatively lightweight bikes, and riders will typically be leaning forward in the seat. That seat is a bit taller, so shorter-than-average riders beware. However, if you need a hit of adrenaline, this type of bike can’t be beat, with incredible acceleration, handling, and maximum speeds.

Touring

Touring motorcycles tend to be on the beefier side, partially due to a large engine and matching fuel tank, partially due to ample storage space. These bikes are designed for cross-country “tours,” or road trips, and they’re built to ensure that these trips are comfortable and well-equipped. A touring bike will have ergonomic seating and controls, high fuel efficiency, and solid power to maintain highway speeds for long periods of time. They’re also built to last!

Off-Road

The final famous class of motorcycle is the off-road motorcycle, or dirt bike. These are designed to explore trails, race on natural terrain, and generally conquer nature. They have taller seats to compensate for undergrowth and brush and incredible suspension. They tend not to have lights, but their flexible and durable frames are designed to handle crashes without the need for major repairs.
