Like their name implies, All Terrain Vehicles—also called ATVs, 4x4s, or quads—are durable and rugged machines that can conquer most things nature can throw at them. But that doesn’t mean they’re invincible, and there are a number of ways you can wreck them thoroughly. We here at Langston Motorsports want to help you avoid those situations, so we’ve put together some of the fastest ways to ruin your ATV. To learn more, or to see the ATVs we have for sale, contact our store in Perris, California, today!

Not Doing Maintenance

Your ATV is a vehicle, and like any vehicle it requires regular maintenance. If you don’t keep up with the schedule recommended in your owner’s manual, you’re likely to end up with a breakdown and a massive service bill. Remember to clean the air filter, change the oil, and clean the radiator regularly. You should also check your nuts and bolts to make sure they’re properly tightened every so often.

Submerging It

While mud, sand, dirt, and other natural settings are easy prey for your ATV, it is absolutely not a submarine. Submerging it, or even getting moisture in the exhaust pipes, can get mud and water into your engine. That’s a great way to kill your machine entirely. Fixing this mistake costs a lot of money and time, so it’s best to avoid it entirely by keeping it out of deep water or investing in the right upgrades.

Not Washing It

Keeping the mechanical parts themselves is important, but so is keeping your machine clean. It’s more than an aesthetic problem—dirt can work its way into the ATV’s engines or other moving parts and clog up processes, causing the engine to overwork or worse. Rain and the occasional brushing won’t do the trick, either. You’ll need to clean it regularly to avoid more expensive maintenance bills.

Letting Fuel Go Bad

Your car will rarely have this problem because of how regularly you use it, but gasoline that sits still for too long can separate and/or congeal. This can start to corrode the inside of your engine and fuel tank, which is exactly as bad as it sounds. If your ATV is going to sit still for a while, make sure to either empty the fuel tank or add a fuel stabilizer.

All that aside, feel free to ignore this is you like to live dangerously and really enjoy massive maintenance fees. If that doesn’t describe you, however, we recommend you stick to your maintenance schedule and ensure your ATV looks good inside and out.
